The Qur'an speaks

Who Is Issa al-Masih?

Before he belongs to any religion, he is named in the book already in your hands. No other prophet in the Qur'an is given as many names, as many titles, or as many miraculous signs. Why would Allah speak this way about one man and no other?

Start with the names.

The Names of Issa al-Masih in the Qur'an

Al-Masih

The Messiah. Given to Issa eleven times in the Qur'an. To no other prophet, not once.

Kalimatullah

The Word of Allah. Not a word from Allah. Not a word about Allah. The Word itself, sent down and made flesh.

Ruh-ul-Lah

A Spirit from Allah. The Qur'an is careful with this title. It gives it to one man.

Zakiy

The Sinless One. Pure. Without blemish. The only man in all the Qur'an to whom Allah gives this designation.

Rahmah

The Mercy of Allah. Surah 19:21 calls his coming a predestined mercy. Not an accident. A plan from before time.

Muqarrab

Brought near to Allah. Of those brought nearest to the throne. A position of intimacy with the Most High.

Questions the Qur'an invites us to ask

Is Issa more than just a prophet?

The Qur'an itself tells us to make no distinction between the prophets. And yet, when you read what the Qur'an says about Issa al-Masih, the language changes. It grows. It lifts.

The Qur'an calls him by names it gives to no other messenger. Al-Masih, the Messiah. Kalimatullah, the Word of Allah. Ruh-ul-Lah, a Spirit from Allah. Rahmah, the Mercy of Allah. Zakiy, the Sinless One. Muqarrab, the one brought near to Allah.

"بَلَغَهُ اللَّهُ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا"

“Behold! The angels said: O Maryam! Allah gives thee glad tidings of a Word from Him. His name will be al-Masih, Issa, the son of Maryam, held in honour in this world and the hereafter and of those brought near to Allah.”

Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:45 | quran.com/3/45

The Qur'an does not elevate one prophet above another. But the Qur'an speaks about this one prophet in language it reserves for him alone. Why would Allah do that? Why would He place these names in His book, and no other?

Why does the Qur'an give Issa titles no other prophet receives?

This is a question every honest reader of the Qur'an eventually has to ask. Nuh is a prophet. Ibrahim is a prophet and a friend of Allah. Musa is a prophet, a messenger, and one who spoke with Allah. Each carries his own honour. But read what the Qur'an places upon Issa al-Masih.

"إِنَّمَا الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَكَلِمَتُهُ أَلْقَاهَا إِلَىٰ مَرْيَمَ وَرُوحٌ مِّنْهُ"

“The Messiah, Issa the son of Maryam, was a messenger of Allah, and His Word which He bestowed upon Maryam, and a Spirit proceeding from Him.”

Surah An-Nisa 4:171 | quran.com/4/171

Messenger. Word. Spirit. Three titles in a single ayah. Each one weighty. Each one given to him. The Qur'an does not explain why. The Qur'an simply records it. Allah chose to speak of this one man in this way. If Allah placed these titles in His book about one messenger and no other, is He pointing at something?

What does Kalimatullah, the Word of God, really mean?

When the Qur'an calls Issa the Word of Allah, it does not say he carried a word from Allah. Every prophet carried a word from Allah. Only Issa is called the Word.

"إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٍ مِّنْهُ اسْمُهُ الْمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ"

“The angels said: O Maryam, Allah gives you good news of a Word from Him whose name is al-Masih, Issa, the son of Maryam.”

Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:45 | quran.com/3/45

His Word. Not a word. His. Sent down. Not composed. Sent. The Word of Allah was sent from Allah into the womb of Maryam, became a human being, and lived among us. The Qur'an is precise. What does it mean for Allah's own Word to take a body and be sent to us?

Did Issa really speak from the cradle?

Yes. The Qur'an records it plainly. Maryam had brought the baby to her people. They accused her. She pointed to the infant.

"قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا ... وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا"

“He said: I am indeed a servant of Allah. He has given me revelation and made me a prophet. He has made me blessed wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me prayer and charity as long as I live. He has made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable. So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day that I shall be raised up to life again.”

Surah Maryam 19:30-33 | quran.com/19/30

Read it slowly. The infant Issa declares his own nature. He pronounces peace over his own birth, his own death, and his own resurrection. No other prophet speaks from the cradle. No other prophet announces peace over his own death while still a nursing child. What is Allah trying to show us?

Why is Maryam the only woman named in the Qur'an?

"وَإِذْ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَا مَرْيَمُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفَاكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَاصْطَفَاكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ"

“Behold! The angels said: O Maryam! Allah has chosen thee and purified thee, chosen thee above the women of all nations.”

Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:42 | quran.com/3/42

Chosen above the women of all nations. Named, when countless others were not. A whole surah carries her name. Allah does not do this by accident. The only reason Maryam is named in the Qur'an is the one who came through her. Why would Allah honour a mother this way, unless the one she bore was like no other?

What miracles did Issa perform, and why did no other prophet do these?

"أَنِّي أَخْلُقُ لَكُم مِّنَ الطِّينِ كَهَيْئَةِ الطَّيْرِ فَأَنفُخُ فِيهِ فَيَكُونُ طَيْرًا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَأُبْرِئُ الْأَكْمَهَ وَالْأَبْرَصَ وَأُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ"

“I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah's leave. And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I raise the dead by Allah's leave.”

Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:49 | quran.com/3/49

Four things are listed. He creates living birds from clay. He heals those born blind. He heals the lepers. He raises the dead. Ibrahim did not raise the dead. Musa did not create life from clay. Only Issa. Creating life from clay is what Allah did with Adam. To give this authority to one man, by His own leave, is no small thing. What is Allah saying about the one He chose to do this?

Is Issa currently alive?

"بَل رَّفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا"

“Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself. And Allah is exalted in power, wise.”

Surah An-Nisa 4:158 | quran.com/4/158

He was taken. He was raised. He is with Allah now. The Qur'an does not say his story is over. It says he is with Allah, and he is coming back. He is alive. He is the Sign of the Hour. The Qur'an does not speak this way of any other prophet. Every other messenger went the way of all flesh. Issa was taken differently. If he is still alive and returning, what does Allah want from us between now and then?

Before we close, a story

The elders used to tell it this way.

The Craftsman's Seal

A craftsman in the old city made vessels of clay. He had made them all his life. Every vessel bore his mark somewhere, a small stamped impression in the base, enough to say who made it. The mark was not large. It was not meant to be seen by those who bought the vessel. It was meant to be found only by those who looked.

One year the craftsman made ten thousand vessels. In nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine of them he pressed his usual mark. In one he pressed his personal seal. The seal of his name. The seal he had made for no other purpose.

The vessels went out into the city. Most people used them for what vessels are used for. A few turned them over and found the mark. They said: yes, this is his work. And they moved on.

One man turned his vessel over and found the personal seal. He sat down. He had never seen it before. He knew it was different from the mark. He had seen the mark on a hundred other vessels. This was not the mark. This was something else entirely.

He went back to the craftsman and said: I found this on the vessel you made. What does it mean?

The craftsman looked at him for a long time. Then he said: It means I made that one myself.
